‘Tének’ utilizes a traditional system of iconography in Mexican culture. Commonly used in embroidery, its images are found on bags, keskem (capes), napkins, or tablecloths, and are easily mistaken as simple decoration. Each Tének motif is unique to the wearer and communicates to others the cultural origins and societal roles of the person wearing the Tének emblazoned garment. This type of embroidery originated in the Tének region of the state of San Luis Potosí in Mexico, and is now being shared by artist and Baltimore resident, Alejandra Martinez. This workshop will teach you the cultural significance, ideology, and artistic significance of Tének embroidery over the course of 4 sessions, during which time you will create your own embroidery that uses these concepts to communicate your own heritage and cultural tradition.<p >Alejandra Martinez is a native Mexican woman who loves her culture, art, and traditions. She has been sharing her passions through Artesanas Mexicanas, the award-winning traditional artist group supported by Creative Alliance, for the past five years as a piñata master.
